Preview:
I've selected the articles I thought were the best from 2024. Mostly these are security articles, but I do include some hardware articles and also services. Check if you missed something.
I've chosen those articles, I thought, were most important. Perhaps you'd like to review some of them you missed or forgot about. This is mostly about security, but also some other things, like E-Book readers.
- January, Restart your devices: Explains the importance of restarting your devices regularly with recommendations for all your devices including, Roku TVs, Routers, computers and more.
- April, E-Book Readers: I make the case for switching from tree-books to e-books. Then explain four categories of e-book reader and the pros and cons of each, with examples.
- May, DuckDuckGo Email accounts. DuckDuckGo offers an email forwarding service. So, I can use my DDG email address and my emails get forwarded to one of my regular steveshank.com accounts. They strip out any trackers and then forward the email to me. They also provide one-time email addresses. So, when I buy something from an unknown vendor, I can create a one-time address that gets forwarded to me. If I begin getting spam from it, I can simply cancel it, as it is only used for that one purchase.
- May: Getting cheap and free e-books
- July : Problems Buying Computers from Amazon. Explains why you should never buy a computer from Amazon unless you are buying directly from the actual manufacturer's store.
- August and November: Emergency Sheets. Creating paper emergency sheets for your critical passwords and we email addresses.
- September Bitwarden: Why I've begun recommending this password manager for people who want to synchronize their laptops, PCs, tablets, and phones.
- October: Need to back up online programs. Why it is critical to have a local backup of the important data you have in the cloud.
- Oct how to back up Bitwarden
- November: Remove OneDrive. I recommend removing OneDrive if you don't use it. It is a needless security and functional hazard.
- December: PayPal Privacy Changes: How PayPal is selling all your information to everyone and the recommendation to cancel your account.
