Portland may get Google fiber


Portland is apparently in the thick of the race to get Google Gigabit Fiber for most of our homes and offices. This is 10 times the speed that internal office networks were 5-10 years ago, and 50-100 times as our current highspeed Internet service. This could change how we use the Internet.

I would expect it to be an incentive for businesses to locate here. It should assist researchers who need to work together and share and collaborate on large amounts of data and high resolution images or video. It should allow families to have some members playing online games, and downloading files while others watch a high definition movie or tv show (or two). As we move to the new 4K video, higher bandwidth will be needed.
