Snakes have heat sensors on either side of its face. If anything warm gets within range, it could be a threat. These sensors continue to work for a few hours after death, even if the head is severed from the body. One man bitten by deadly severed snake head and rushed to the hospital said, "When I reached down to pick up the head, it raised around and did a backflip almost, and bit my finger. I had to shake my hand real hard to get it to let loose."
