Simple Rules For Browsing

  • When making online transactions, be sure web addresses begin with https (not http) and look for a key or padlock icon in your browser window.
  • Don't click pop-ups and don't download files from websites you don't trust. Use WOT or McAfee's site advisor or similar program to validate unknown vendors.
  • Don't surf to other sites while you are visiting a secure banking site; finish banking, always log out and close your browser tab before you move on.
  • Don't click links or open attachments in unexpected emails.
  • Never send personal or sensitive information by email without encrypting it and calling the recipient to give them the password.
  • Begin thinking in terms of passphrases, not passwords.
  • Don't use the same passphrase for insecure websites that you use for secure sites.
  • Never answer security questions (like mother's maiden name, High School, etc.) correctly. Record those answers in your password program. Remember, if someone can answer those questions, they can hijack your account without needing your password.
