Clarity on Windows 10 Extended Service

Comcast is migrating its email service to Yahoo, which will analyze users' emails for targeted ads, and sell personal data to third parties. Switch to a privacy-focused paid email service, and purchase a personal domain to avoid future disruptions.

It is September, and October 14 will be the last patch for Microsoft Windows 10. There are three options:

  1. Get a new Windows 11 computer
  2. Subscribe to Microsoft's extended service
  3. Subscribe to ZeroPatch's security service (0patch.com).

This article will describe Microsoft's extended service option. The option is available to anyone with the latest Windows 10, which is version 22H2, with the latest updates. The $30 annual fee is good for up to 10 computers on a single Microsoft account. This makes it significantly cheaper than 0patch, which is about $27/year per computer if you have more than one computer.

Microsoft has two other payment options: Sync with Windows backup to Onedrive which I recommend strongly against because it is not a real backup. The other is to pay with Microsoft rewards, whatever that is. Just pay the $30.

Right-click on the Windows Start button and choose Settings. Then select Windows Update. At that point, there should be an option to "Enroll Now” for extended security updates (ESU). If it isn't there yet, it will be soon. This will require that you sign into your Microsoft account, and it will provide patches through October 2026. If you have any other computers, they will need to sign into the same Microsoft account.

Choose the one-time purchase unless you have sufficient Microsoft reward points.

It is not necessary that you log into Windows with a Microsoft account. You can continue with a local account, but your licenses will be managed through your Microsoft account.

You can also use the 0patch service. 0patch service has promised to continue providing updates for five years. Microsoft is a more cost-effective option if you have more than one computer, since their subscription is good for up to 10 computers. Microsoft is saying it is a one-year-only option. Even if you do Microsoft, you can switch to 0patch next year.
