Folder Guard for Nod32

Preview:

Eset Nod32 has a new premium feature that is worth getting. Their Folder Guard option will protect folders from most ransomware attacks.

For those using Nod32, they have recently added a new security feature called Folder Guard to their premium subscription. This is one of the most exciting innovations I've seen. It was good enough, that I upgraded my subscription to include it.

What is folder guard?

Folder Guard provides simple folder protection by restricting access to chosen folders except for trusted applications. This is excellent defense against ransomware, unauthorized modifications and exfiltration of files.

ESET has a massive list of trusted applications. This is not just an application, but a fingerprint of the application, so it cannot be changed or impersonated. If the application is on their list, or you approved it, then it is allowed to access the restricted folders. Otherwise, it is blocked.

I recommend blocking your documents' folder, your desktop, and your backups. Some people may also want to protect their photos or some other folders.

This is what it looks like when an untrusted application tries to access a folder that is protected. When a newly upgraded version of O&O Shutup10++ tried to access its own configuration file stored under the documents' folder, it was blocked with this notice.

Folderguard Warning

I was told what the program was and what file it was attempting to access. This is precisely what I want to happen, so I clicked the option to create a rule and allow permanently. Then I clicked Allow. ESET Nod32 knows that nearly all the programs we run daily are safe, and they are automatically allowed. The only hassle this causes, is when a program is very unusual, or when a program is updated and Nod32 hasn't yet learned it is OKAY. Then, it requires permission. Even updated programs don't necessarily request permission because Nod32 may have learned about the new program from other users who updated before you.

How do I use it?

You'll need to upgrade to the Premium version.

I've always recommended that clients save money and simply purchase the essentials version of ESET Nod32. This is the first time I've felt the Premium version offered enough value to be worth the extra expense. I upgrade myself. If you upgrade, ESET simply charges you a prorated amount for the price difference until the end of your current subscription.

I've upgraded. How do I activate it?

Enabling Folder Guard

That's it. Now Folder Guard is enabled. However, you still need to protect a couple of folders. There are two ways. You can simply add the folders from inside them ESET Folder Guard menu option in settings.

Listing or adding protected folders

Just click Add new folder and grab them. You can see I am protecting my Documents folder and my internal backups' folder. Then also both of my external USB backup drives.

But an even easier way is to right-click on the folder you want to protect inside of File Explorer, Choose NOD32, and then add that folder.

Adding folders from file explorer

Nod32's Folder Guard offers a simple and effective way to protect yourself better against ransomware or an attack deleting or exfiltrating your files. I think it is worth the added cost of the premium version.

Note to Webroot clients

Many of my clients are using Webroot, which sadly, in 2019, it was purchased by Carbonite. Later, even worse, OpenText acquired Carbonite and Webroot. Since then, I've slowly noticed a lack of innovation for both Carbonite backup and Webroot antivirus. I now prefer ESET Nod32. Webroot has gone from a slick company in the forefront of antivirus to an okay company that is slipping.

My recommendation is that when your Webroot subscriptions expire, cancel them and switch to Nod32 Premium.
