Wife may be hard of hearing

After a doctor's appointment, an elderly man asked his doctor for help. He explained that he thought his wife was getting hard of hearing, but she wasn't comfortable asking for help with it. He asked for a simple, unobtrusive test.

The doctor said that he should stand behind her about 30 feet away and ask a question with a normal volume. Then repeat at 15 feet. Finally, while he's right behind her. If she can answer at 30 feet, her hearing is excellent. If at 15, then there isn't a real problem, but keep alert for the future. If she can't hear when he's right behind her, then he needs to ask her to get tested and fitted for a hearing aid.

The man goes home and while his wife is making dinner, he moves about 30 feet away and asks her, "Honey, how long before dinner?". There is no response.

Then he moves 15 feet away while she is still facing the counter making dinner and asks, "Honey, how long before dinner?". No response.

Then he steps right behind her and places his hand lovingly on her shoulder and asks, "Dearest, how long before dinner?"

She spins around, rather irritated, and says, "15 minutes, just like I told you the last two times you asked."
