Business Software

Client Management

ChaosSoftware's Time & chaos and Intellect: I track all my clients, my tasks and appointments and my Email using this fantastic client relations management / personal information management software. It is simple, fast, inexpensive, yet very powerful. Using their sync functions I can synchronize to my phone, tablet and notebook. The first thing I do each morning it check Intellect and see what it tells me needs to be done. A newsletter article on it is here. Great for anyone who needs to track activities, appointments and people.

Billing

  • Legal Billing (Works with Time and Chaos/Intellect): Very simple fast time billing module for 1 or 2 person offices. Great for Lawyers, accountants or computer consultants. I use this software and recommend it for any small simple operation which bills mostly for time.

Writing / Office

  • Open Office / Libre Office: Complete office suites comparable to Microsoft Office, except free and open source. A little too much for me, but occasionally I find Libre Office useful. This is my spreadsheet of choice.
  • Jarte Word Processor: What little word processing I do, is done in this small simple gem.
  • NotePad++: My current text editor of choice.
  • Treepad Business Edition: I do most of my writing, newsletters, proposals and work orders using this inexpensive outline processor.
  • Evernote: I have over 2,000 notes in my Evernote files. It is a tool I use every day to track client contact, and random information I'll need to find later. Particularly excellent for note taking and grabbing information from the Internet.
  • PDF Xchange Viewer and Editor: I do not install Adobe Acrobat reader on client machines. This program is free, offers more, is faster and more secure than Adobe Acrobat Reader. It also lets you fill in forms and add comments. I've written a few articles referring to it. Their Editor program functions as both viewer and editor and gives you some flexibility in editing PDF documents.
  • BullZip PDF Writer : Free software that lets you save anything you can print from any program to PDF.

Integrating Mobile Computing

I support Android Tablets and phones and will work with you to integrate these mobile devices into your business.

Accounting

I am not an accountant, and do not play one on TV. However, I have used Quicken to run my business for over 10 years, so, I can handle routine questions and training, but will recommend another consultant for complex or technical issues. I also always immediately refer my clients to skilled people with real bookkeeping and accounting experience when questions go beyond the simple.
