Germany Chooses Firefox

Article for:Everyone
Difficulty:Easy
Importance: Mild

The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) tested Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, and Edge to decide on the browser they would endorse for use by the German government. They did not test Safari or other browsers, just these four.

They had 21 criteria. They recommended Firefox, which passed all 21 criteria. Internet Explorer failed in 8 categories. No one should be using Internet Explorer. Edge and Chrome both failed at least 3, including:

  • Organizational transparency. (are their management and privacy policies clear?)
  • Can you block telemetry collection (are they tracking you?)
  • Do they offer a master password to protect your sign-in passwords?
