Bitwarden Security Settings

Enormous vault with armed guards

Bitwarden is great, but convenience can conflict with security. This guide walks you through good security settings for your desktop app, browser extension, and mobile devices to keep your vault safe without making everyday access a hassle.

If you are using Bitwarden for your password manager, you should have copies on your computer, your phone, and also as a browser extension. I'll review settings for these three devices. I am assuming you have the Premium account, which costs $10/year.

The problem and solution

We need to balance ease of use with security. If someone steals my computer, I don't want them to have access to all my passwords. On the other side, I would rather not be forced to enter my full password all the time on my computer or my browser. So, I can access Bitwarden with a PIN once it is running, but when it starts up, I require the full password. This means I can just enter a PIN most of the time. I must enter the full password when I start up my browser or restart my computer.

The Browser extension

As you can see, I unlock with a PIN because it is easier but require my master password whenever the browser restarts. I always close my browser when I leave the office. I have it lock Bitwarden after 30 minutes so it will require the PIN again.

Desktop App

With the desktop app, I have it time out in an hour and then lock. It can unlock with a pin. Bitwarden requires a full password when the program is launched. This way, if someone breaks in or steals my computer, they'll need to enter the full password to access my vault. You can access the settings with CTRL-, or File > Settings.

Phones and Laptops

For both phones and laptops, sign in using biometrics (your fingerprint). It is the easiest and most secure method.
